What Lice Treatment Services Do

By Diane Lee

In the United States alone, research has indicated that between 6 and 12 million children get lice in their heads. There is nothing more frustrating to a parent than a kid who will not stop crying because their head is infested with little bugs that they cannot get out. Even though the insects are not harmful to health in any way according to research, they are uncomfortable to have in the hair. This is what Lice Treatment Services do.

These insects infest heads and attach themselves to the hair shafts. Here is where their tiny eggs are laid. Nits is the name given to the eggs they lay. Killing the adult lice and their laid eggs is the goal of an effective removal method. Based on professional view, several methods need to be applied together so as to achieve best results.

The reason for employing multiple methods is that lice have become resistant to most treatment methods that exist currently. The insects have exhibited a significant level of resistance to over-the-counter medication that people use these days. On the other hand, prescription insecticides have also proved to be toxic in large part. Thus, in case one employs a treatment service, it is important to know what methods they intend to use.

An infestation may be cured by natural remedies and other persons have great trust in them. Proponents purport that home remedies are effective. However, it is difficult to prove efficiency level of such remedies since there is no body of knowledge to support the claims made. Besides, research has not been done on natural remedies to the same extent as commercial treatments. To summarize, the information body on natural treatments has failed to sufficiently prove that this methods are effectual. One is free to try their lack with such medications if they like.

One of the methods that have been known to work, but needs to be used in conjunction with other methods is combing. In this method, the hair should be combed section by section as one removes nits and adults from the hair. There are many good types of combs that have been designed specifically for this function. This process needs to be done on a daily basis to reduce the infestation.

Unfortunately, elimination of the entire infestation using this technique alone is quite hard. As such, other techniques including application of olive oil is required. This type of oil blocks the airways used by the insect for breathing hence suffocating them out. The olive oil is supposed to be applied at bed time and the head covered using a hair cap. This is necessary because lice have been known to survive even after going through several hours of not breathing.

Hot air has been known to be very effective at killing nits. The efficiency of hot air at killing adult insects has however been found to be poor. One should use a dryer to blow hair repeatedly for efficiency. When done correctly, this method can eliminate up to 89 percent of nits.

An infestation can still reoccur even if it has been removed. Therefore, a person should be keen with the way they keep their personal hygiene. Other personal items like combs and clothing items should not be shared to reduce re-infestation.
